What is smp?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic procedure which mimics a five o’clock shadow with pointillism. Impressions (dots) are placed superficially into the upper dermis in order to create a gradient on the skin which resembles follicles. Hair loss contributes to over 50% of Americans suffering from a hereditary disposition such as androgenic alopecia (pattern baldness), hormonal changes including alopecia areata, scalp infections, drugs, surgery, radiation, stress, or traction alopecia, loss of hair due to COVID-19, and valley fever.

The SMP consultation will be a fifteen to thirty-minute meeting to discuss your concerns and questions. A patch test will be administered, so you are able to see our workmanship. It is best to understand the process prior to starting, so you can make a sound decision regarding the treatment. During the consultation, we will discuss post care in depth, so you are able to maintain the retention of your new hairline. The only rule of thumb is to avoid getting your head wet for four days following your treatment and applying sunscreen daily before going outside. We will go over hairline types and which hair line fits your features. Once a hairline is chosen, the booking fee will be paid, and your appointment will be scheduled.

SESSIONS

Scalp Micropigmentation is currently the only alternative to hair transplant surgery which eliminates down time, and gives instant results the same day that you receive treatment. Four sessions are required in order to ensure the skin has time to heal between impressions (dot) placement. After each session the skin retains the ink in place, until the next overlay creates a grid on the skin. Once all four sessions are completed the impressions will blend seamlessly into the native hair follicles. Touchups are required after 2-3 years post service to maintain the color.

HAIRLINE TYPES

There are three main hairline types for males which are hard lines, soft lines, and hybrid lines which are all staggered. A hard line is staggered closer together in order to create an implied barber hairline. The soft line is staggered further apart in order to create a soft and broken hairline. A hybrid hairline is an exaggerated recession of the temple area coupled with a soft hairline. All three hairlines are staggered to create hyper realism. There is no right or wrong hairline, but we do take into consideration how this hairline will affect your bone structure and facial features. When choosing a hairline we pre-draw the different types on your skin prior to starting your appointment.

DENSITY

Density treatments can be for men or women suffering hair loss at the hairline, part line, or crown. Normally these treatments are reserved for men or women with long hair, or thinning hair, and they don’t want to cut. The rule of thumb is as long as there are no bald spots, density treatments are effective at creating a darker hue on the skin to create the illusion of thickness. Density treatments normally take more time than a standard treatment time and must be done millimeter by millimeter in order to ensure the entire area is completed.

SCARS

Surgical scars such as hair transplant scars are normally camouflaged by 80% when doing SMP, because we can work within and outside the scar tissue. We would blend the scar outside the existing donor area so it can softly migrate into the other areas of the scalp. Scars are trickier to work with because the skin once damaged is never the same, and may require more sessions to ensure they are filled properly. Most scars are a different color than the scalp, so the first step is to slowly blend the white scar tissue and then extend the impressions into existing follicles.
